OLIVES AND CRETAN GASTRONOMY!

Hiking and discovering gastronomy in Western Crete. On this trip you will discover the great diversity of the landscape, the culture and the local traditions. We hike on the island of contrasts, mountains, olive groves and coastal paths long the turquoise blue ​​Libyan See. In the villages, we meet producers of the excellent local products and we enjoy the grandmother recipes with the wild greens and herbs of the island.

Day 1: Arrival in Chania, a beautiful former Venetian town of the Mediterranean Sea. Free time. Dinner together. Stay in a hotel in Chania.

Day 2: Market day: We go to the market to learn about the local products. The afternoon will include a wine tasting and a cooking session with traditional Cretan recipes, that will be enjoyed.

Day 3:The olives: Olive harvest with a picnic. Visit of an olive oil factory and the small museum dedicated to a millenary olive tree of the village, more than 3000 years old.

Day 4: The White Mountains: Free morning in Chania. After lunch, we leave by bus to Anopolis, located high in the White Mountains. Visit at the baker who perpetuates a centuries-old tradition and prepares the most delicious biscuits. A short hike before dinner. We settle for two nights.

Day 5: Agios Giannis, Balkoni, Aradena: Hike on the Anapolis plateau, a complete different scenery and a visit to the historic village of Aradena. In the afternoon we have a Cretan cooking session.

Day 6: Coastal hike: We go down to the small village Loutro and continue by a beautiful coastal path, passing by the magic beach “Glika Nera”, till we reach the small fisher town Chora Sfakion, where we will take a transfer to Chania. Stay at the hotel in Chania for two nights.

Day 7: Fruit and Wine: We go to the greenest part of Crete with orange orchards and avocado trees. We visit a wine house for a guided tour and wine tasting. After a delicious lunch, we drive back to Chania. Free time and dinner.

 8: Departure day: Transfer to the airport.

Including:

• 7 nights accommodation in a double room with breakfast in cozy small hotels and guesthouses. (individual room is possible with an extra charge).

• 6 times lunch and 7 times dinner (day of arrival dinner only, day of departure breakfast only).

• All excursions with an English  and German guide.

• Transfers to and from the airport of Chania, Crete (Daskalogiannis).

• Transports of the program by public or private bus, boat, taxi.

• Transportation of your luggage from hotel to hotel.

Not included:

• The flight: You can book the flight, for instance, with Aegean Airlines to Chania with transfer to Athens. (Good connection). Or by a direct charter flight to Chania (Crete).

• You are expected to have a travel- and cancellation insurance yourself.

• Drinks.


General information:

  • Hikes: The hikes are of a maximum of three hours and in mountain area. One has to take into account the terrain, there are many stones on the paths and therefore good walking shoes and sticks are recommended. The hikes are not difficult for someone with a good physical condition. Hiking participation is at your own risk.  
  • Accommodations: We stay in local pensions and hotels. The rooms are with private bathroom.
  • Meals: We provide breakfast, lunch and dinner every day with local products and specialities.
  • Luggage: For your comfort, luggage will be transported from hotel to hotel. Make sure that you carry no more than one normal size suitcase. A backpack of at least 20 liters is required to take your hiking equipment.
  • In case of force majeure: For reasons of weather conditions, the guide reserves the right to make program changes and will not be held responsible in case of force majeure such as bad weather or strikes. We will always choose the best alternative for you. 
  • Minimum participation: To make the trip possible, there must be a minimum participation of six members. You can register with the contact-form. You will be kept informed of the number of participants. As soon as there are enough participants, the trip will be confirmed and you can book your flight. The earlier you sign up, the cheaper your flight will be!

Day 1: Arrival in Chania, one of the most beautiful former Venetian towns of the Mediterranean Sea. Free time. Introduction dinner together. Stay in an hotel in Chania.

Day 2: Market Day: We go to the market and other places to buy delicious fresh typical products from the island. A cooking demonstration in a beautiful location with Cretan traditional recipes.

Day 3: The olives: The day starts with an orange juice under a 3000 years old olive tree. We continue through the olive groves to a very special olive oil factory. In the factory there is a guided tour about how to make high-quality olive oil which we will try of course. We have lunch in an authentic village. After lunch we make a nice hike of two hours.

Day 4: Caves and gorges: We drive to a wilder area in the mountains with chestnut trees, the area of ​​the eagles and the vultures. We make a nice mountain hike and visit a historical cave. Lunch in a village of the region.

Day 5: Kissamos: We start from the fishing village, where you can visit the small museum with antiquities from the region. Following we make a beautiful coastal hike on the Peninsula of Gramvoussa.

Day 6: Palia Roumata – Sembrona: Hike through a landscape with old olive trees and with a fantastic scenery. Lunch in a traditional village and transfer to Chania, where we stay the last two nights.

Day 7: Fruit and Wine: We go to a beautiful green area with orange orchards and avocado trees. We will visit a wine house to taste the Cretan wines. After a delicious lunch, we drive back to Chania. Free time and farewell dinner.

Day 8: Departure day: Transfer to the airport.
